QK Agent Round Kicks Off

Here we go! The agent round! Before you dive in, please - agents and entrants - read this post!

Agents, please be advised that due to an unforeseen medical emergency, all the entries in this special showcase are on Mike and Kara's blogs ONLY. The other half of the entries can be found on Kara's blog by clicking here.

Entries are in this order: Adult, YA, Middle Grade, for your convenience in reading the categories that you represent.

Agents will request by saying, “I want to see more of this!” and leaving their submission instructions.  As you remember, agent requests will stay hidden until an entry is knocked out of the tournament.

Kombatants, don’t forget to put QUERY KOMBAT Request in your subject line when sending material!

The number of pages you’ll send depends on how far you go in Query Kombat! It's because we're super evil. Here's how the system works:

Host Saves or Round 2 knockout = 30 page request
Round 3 knockout = 50 page request
Round 4 knockout = 100 page request
Round 5 knockout = 150 page request
Round 6 knockout = 200 page request
GRAND CHAMPION = Full request

For instance, getting knocked out in the third round means an entrant will send 50 pages to any agent who requested their work. The grand champion winner from the final round will see their requests bumped up to a full. Host Saves will be allowed to see their requests immediately as they are not continuing to the 2nd round.

If an agent sees an entry where the minimum of 30 pages isn’t enough, they can play a wild card and name their amount of pages and get their request immediately! If they fall in love and absolutely want a full, the wild card will let them do that. Each agent gets two wild cards.

However, only two wild cards can stand per entry. That means only the first two wild cards count. After that, agents will have to wait until the entry is knocked out.

So that’s it! Commenting on entries is only allowed for agents. Kombatants can mix and mingle on Twitter but can’t comment, with the exception of this post where they can leave questions.

Best of luck and May the Requests Be With You! BATTLE ON!

The Host Saves

These are 6 total entries that we hosts picked from our teams to move on to the agent round but not on to Round 2. Check out Michelle's and Kara's picks as well. The Host Saves can submit a revised entry and will go to the agent round, but not to the second kombat round.

I spent a LOT of time trying to decide which entry to save. Even before any votes had come in, I wondered how on earth I was supposed to pick. My personal favorite? The most marketable? Most diverse? Own voices? Closest vote? The entry where I most disagreed with the judge's feedback? The one I thought agents would like the most? ARGH THIS IS SOOOOOO HARD!

At the end of the day, I wish I could save you all. But I wound up having to pick:

UPDATED
Farmer Jack is Trapped in a Carrot
&
Absalom, Absalom!

Congrats everyone!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see you all at the agent round!

QK Round 1: Mississippi Amnesia VS Lady CEOs Are Sexy, Too

Title: The Madhouse Gardener
Entry Nickname: Mississippi Amnesia
Word Count: 80,000
Genre: Adult Historical Fiction

Query:

When Ligon Smith Forbes arrives at the Mississippi Insane Hospital in the summer of 1938, she has some work to do. Not just the job of publicity director for which she was hired, but the work of piecing her shattered life back together. Dumped by her lover Earlene, grieving the death of her sister, and humiliated by her latest fall from the teetotaling wagon, she does what she’s always done when her personal life is in shambles: ignores it and throws herself into her work.

She discovers an elderly man with amnesia known only as Mr. X, who has been living at the hospital for years, tending flowers in the hospital greenhouse. An unlikely friendship grows between the two, as Mr. X encourages her to reveal more and more of her true self. Ligon seizes upon the idea of helping the man, and she launches a national publicity campaign to help Mr. X recover his identity.

If the campaign succeeds, Ligon might finally win the professional acclaim that’s always been just out of her reach. But as the campaign thrusts them into the spotlight, both Ligon and Mr. X find that there are unintended consequences to being in the public eye.

First 250:

On a hazy summer day in 1938, Mrs. Ligon Smith Forbes stepped off the train from Jackson onto the Whitfield station platform, squared her shoulders, and raised her eyes to survey her new home: the Mississippi Insane Hospital. This wasn’t her first visit, of course, but it felt different knowing this time, she would be staying. From the train station at the bottom of the hill, she could take in the full sweeping grandeur of the sprawling campus of elegant buildings, brick walkways, and green lawns. But all she could focus on at this moment was the glare of the blazing sun as it threatened to bore through her red-rimmed eyes straight into her tender, throbbing brain. She reached up to adjust her wide-brimmed straw hat to better shield herself, shifted her heavy traveling bag from one hand to the other, and began the long climb up the road towards the main gates, and the tree-lined driveway beyond that led to the main administration building.

The hospital looked more like a grand estate or a college campus than a lunatic asylum. The driveway wound between lush green lawns dotted with flower beds, gently sloping upward towards the Mount Vernon style administration headquarters, complete with imposing columns and a white cupola. The serenity of the grounds stood in sharp contrast to the riot of pain and nausea and self-loathing bubbling through Ligon. Her mouth tasted like an ashtray and she felt like she could smell whiskey coming out of her pores.

Title: Swaying Magnolia
Entry Nickname: Lady CEOs Are Sexy, Too
Word Count: 82,000
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance (#OwnVoices)

Query:

Twenty-two year old Maggie Reyne has never felt more like a fish out of water than when she moves away from her small town to start an internship at a San Francisco tech company. Maggie desperately needs to make it to full time to help out her Baptist preacher father with his financial struggles.

On her first day of work, Maggie nearly gets herself fired. She comes face to face with the CEO of the company, Victoria Citron, a twenty-nine year old prodigy and tech industry celebrity, infamous for demanding perfection. Not realizing who she’s talking to, Maggie lets slip a piece of gossip she heard about her. Maggie believes her gaffe is going to be the end of her career, but instead it launches the most unexpected relationship of her life. Victoria is impressed by Maggie’s particular brand of quiet audacity—which goes from accidental to intentional—and falls for her.

Maggie, who has lived her sheltered life with the assumption that she’s straight, is shocked to realize that she is deeply attracted to Victoria. In order to keep up appearances with her Baptist family, Maggie begins to dig herself into deeper and deeper lies, and Victoria’s patience with Maggie’s deceptions only stretches so far. Maggie has to find the courage to dive headfirst into her relationship, even if it means bringing loss and ruin to the world she's always known. And if she doesn’t soon, Victoria might make that decision for her.

First 250:

From where I stood on the elevated train platform, I could see the Bay Bridge, stretching out like an arrow, pointing to towering skyscrapers wrapped in fog. So this was San Francisco in August. Bright sun teased the East Bay and San Francisco’s surrounding areas, but a spell of clouds had been cast over the city. Two hours away in the central valley, summer meant warm evenings lazing by the pool, iced lemonade, bloodshot sunsets. I’d never known anything else. I couldn’t call that home anymore, though. This gloomy place had snatched the title, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Shaking the thought away, I lugged my bags down a set of stairs to the street. I hailed a taxi—I couldn’t bring myself to download and use the Uber app as George had suggested—and we drove off to my new house. Well, George’s house.

The freeway afforded another unobstructed view of the city, its towers looming like jagged teeth. My hand darted to the simple gold cross around my neck. A gift from my parents on my sixteenth birthday, it was the only nice piece of jewelry I owned. I rubbed the smooth metal of the cross until it became warm, and I suddenly became aware of my posture. Had I been sitting bolt upright this whole time? Relax, Maggie. Yes, I longed for the lush fields of infinite almond trees back in Redford, but this was the right thing to do. The right thing to do—my courage-rallying mantra these last few weeks.

QK Round 1: Why Are You Obsessed w/ Me? VS Cherry & Ben Camp & Kiss

Title: Guarded
Entry Nickname: Why Are You So Obsessed With Me?
Word Count: 76,000
Genre: Contemporary Romance (#OwnVoices)

Query:

Being the center of attention and the subject of tabloid gossip isn’t anything new for actress Ava Madison. After all, it’s not every day someone who uses a wheelchair becomes a Golden Globe winner. So when rumors swirl that she and her friend, heartthrob Brett Sinclair, are an item, she doesn’t feel the need to address them—until Brett falls for someone else. Knowing the public will turn on him if they think he dumped her, Ava comes up with a plan that’ll help him while also proving to everyone that even though she has a disability, she’s never a victim. But she never expects her plan to backfire—and she definitely never expects Brett’s fans to vandalize her property and threaten her life because they think she broke his heart.

Just when she thinks things can’t get worse, Ava’s manager hires a security team for her that includes live-in bodyguard Leo Matthews. Always striving to be as independent as possible, Ava hates the arrangement, and she couldn’t have had a worst first impression of Leo, but she ultimately can’t deny her attraction to the tall, dark, blue-eyed former Navy SEAL who seems to know her every desire. As their relationship heats up, the threats from Brett’s fans get closer and more dangerous, affecting not just Ava but starting to put those around her at risk. Ava is scared of losing Leo—but she’s also scared that she’s falling in love with him.

First 250:

Ava Madison and Brett Sinclair Getting Married!

Wedding bells are on the horizon for recent Golden Globe winner, and our favorite cougar, Ava Madison! Sources tell us that her boyband heartthrob boyfriend, Brett Sinclair, popped the question to her last weekend! They plan on tying the knot as soon as possible, creating growing speculation that she is indeed pregnant with twins, as we reported last week. One thing’s for sure—those babies are going to be gorgeous!

At twenty-eight years old, I was a cougar.

Never mind that men like Jack Nicholson and John Stamos had women one-third their age on their arm every time they made an appearance and no one batted an eye, but as soon as I was ‘caught canoodling’ with Brett, five years my junior, you’d think I was a decrepit old woman robbing the cradle.

At least I don’t look like one.

I rolled my eyes and clicked off the site before taking a sip of my tepid coffee, flashing a smile to the barista as he glanced my way. The speculation about Brett and me was crazy. It started when he took me as his plus one to the AMA’s. We never commented about our relationship, so according to celeb gossip sites we were either hooking up, engaged, already secretly married, or preparing for the upcoming birth of our twins. No one ever considered the truth—that we’re just friends.

Title: Embers and Flame
Entry Nickname: Cherry and Ben Camp and Kiss
Word Count: 61K
Genre: M/M Romance

Query:

Charles “Cherry” Andrews needs to prove to himself that he can have a life on his own. His ex left him the couch, the bed, and the camping equipment. Replacing the city and hospital sounds with crickets and birdsong at his favorite campground feels like the perfect vacation, but instead of finding peace, he’s simply bored.

Ben Torres set out on a motorcycle tour of the country as a way to find his own peace after his mother’s death, but a bad baffle curtails his plans within hours of leaving home. Luckily for him, the guy in the next camp spot happily shares his fishing equipment as well as offering taxi
service.

An unplanned kiss on their last day together leads to an afternoon of discovery that turns into a summer romance that becomes a long distance relationship. Everything would be wonderful if they could spend the rest of their lives in a small tent next to a lake, but when Cherry’s concerned
ex-boyfriend and Ben’s teen son become part of the equation, they fear that two-hundred miles may be too far.

First 250:

The roar of the motorcycle pulling into the campsite next to mine shattered the peace of the evening, and I imagined the sunset’s reflection in the small lake rippling with the vibrations. I glared as the intruder flipped the kickstand down and swung his leg over the seat, but my scowl softened as the man pulled off his jacket to reveal tight black jeans that displayed trim hips and a tight ass. Any resentment at the interruption evaporated completely when he removed his helmet and shook his jaw-length black hair. He caught me watching and stepped my way. I struggled to rise from my low camp-chair as he crossed the space between us, extending his hand.

“Ben Torres,” he offered as he wrapped his hand around mine. A bright smile, set off by tawny skin and dark eyes that were almost as black as his hair, dazzled me, drying my mouth, making it difficult to form words.

I gathered my wits with a deep inhale and introduced myself. “I’m Cherry.” Ben’s mouth rose on one side, as did a thick eyebrow, when he tipped his head while my hand was still tight in his grip. I wasn’t exactly suave at the best of times, and gorgeous men made me more awkward than usual. Sweat broke out across the back of my neck as I rattled out my clarification. “Uh, Charles. Andrews. The third. Grandpa was Charles, Dad is Charlie.” Like a total doof, I pointed towards my auburn hair with the hand not in his possession.

QK Round 1: Swimming with the Amoebas VS I Kidnapped the Prom Queen

Title: SPLASH
Entry Nickname: Swimming with the Amoebas
Word Count: 62,000
Genre: YA Horror

Query:

Sixteen-year-old Maxine Spielman has no boobs, a fact which may ultimately save her life.

On the first night of summer, wearing a borrowed sundress and bra stuffed with toilet paper, Maxine and her friends break into Splash, the new water park scheduled to open in just two days. After some inept groping, Maxine retreats to the locker room while the others enjoy the water. When Maxine discovers someone else in the room, she can tell that something's not right based on the way he sits, the awkward tilt of his head, and how he doesn't respond when she turns on the lights. Something drips in the otherwise silent room, but it isn't water.

The next day, her friends are dead, killed by something that lives in the water. With nowhere left to turn, Maxine confides in her cute neighbor. But as the death toll increases, Maxine's suspicions grow more outlandish, causing him to dismiss her warnings and agree to take his litter sister to opening day.

To save her town and the boy she's fallen for, Maxine must shut down Splash. And she only has twenty-four hours to do it.

First 250
:

Whoever came up with the high school end of year survey should be shot. Buried. Dug up and shot again. I mean, you make it through the whole year without suffering any permanent damage to your social standing and WHAM, out comes this survey so you know exactly where you rank at the start of summer. To make matters worse, it has the exact same question about me as last year.

Will Maxine Spielman get boobs this summer?

I pretend to stretch so I can watch the ruffles puff out on my cami. It's the fancy one with the extra ruffles right where it counts. But they don't move much despite my best efforts. Defeated, I lean back on my stool to minimize any skin contact with the gross black surface of the lab bench and turn my attention to Mr. Johnson.

Who needs boobs anyway?

"Come on folks," Mr. Johnson says and raises his arms for quiet. Two large pit stains in the shape of crescent moons darken his shirt. "I know it's the end of the year, but we can't get through sophomore biology without at least one class on the higher vertebrates. Now Aiden, give me one of the defining characteristics of mammals. What produced the milk you had on your cereal this morning?"

"A cow?"

"Yes, Aiden, very funny. But what specifically do cows have that, say, a salamander does not?"

"A mammary gland," he groans.

"That's right! Mammals have mammary glands."

Title: The Takedown
Entry Nickname: I Kidnapped the Prom Queen 4 Spring Break
Word Count: 77,000
Genre: YA Thriller (Ownvoices)

Query:

Seventeen-year-old Rylee Gilmore is looking forward to spending spring break lounging lakeside with her best friend, Danni. But Rylee’s plans for a drama free week with her BFF are shot when Danni breaks the news she’s bringing along her current hook up, Jared Anthony—who just so happens to be the boyfriend of reigning Oakdale High mean girl, Sophie Ferguson. Even worse, he’s bringing his cousin, Drake, and any guy who shares DNA with Jared can’t be good.

But a chance meeting with Drake forty-eight hours before their planned trip changes Rylee’s mind, and now she can’t stop thinking about him. Except, Sophie changed her spring break plans, deciding instead to spend a romantic week alone with Jared instead of a Cancun vacay with her girls. Without Jared, Rylee knows her chances of getting to know Drake better could be ruined. Unless she and Danni stop spoiled Sophie from getting her way and plan the ultimate takedown.

Now Sophie is missing and no one has a clue what happened to her. But what started as a stupid prank has become dangerously real, and this takedown could have deadly consequences.

THE TAKEDOWN is best described as MEAN GIRLS meets JAWBREAKER.

First 250:

There are two kinds of seniors who ride the bus during their final year of high school: the poor kids and the losers. My best friend, Danni, and I were both. If you were lucky, at least one friend in your squad had a car, but since Danni was my only friend, we were pretty much limited to public transportation.

“Hey, beyotch,” she said as she made her way down the bus aisle.

“You’re seriously wearing a turtleneck today?” I said. “That’s the second time this week.”

Danni glanced down at herself as if she’d forgotten what she was wearing and shrugged. “So?”

“So…it’s like a thousand degrees outside. Aren’t you worried about having a heat stroke in that thing?” I fanned myself with a folder and pushed the damp hair off my forehead. Eighty degrees already and it was just morning. Another Forrest Hills, Texas scorcher. The armpits of my shirt were completely soaked, and I had to sit on my bookbag to keep the back of my thighs from sticking to the vinyl seat. Times like this made me wish more than ever for my own car with the AC on full blast.

“For your information, I’m not hot at all and I happen to like what I’m wearing,” she said.

“If you say so.” I decided not to mention the tiny beads of sweat dotting her hairline. At least the turtleneck covered Danni’s three day old hickey, courtesy of her latest boy-toy, Jared.
