Query Kombat Round 1 Begins!

Get that thick skin in place because here we go! Round 1

Hop on over to Laura's and Michelle's blogs to see the rest of the match-ups and entries! They are spread all over the place. Some here, some there. We've got a little bit of everything: Adult/NA, YA, and MG! This round lasts until June 5th at 8 pm.

On the last day the hosts will call out for extra judges to come and break ties, or in case of extra close votes to try and get a more decisive margin. In the event a tie remains, the blog host will provide the tie breaker. The entry with the most votes for Victory moves forward to the agent round on June 7th! Kombatants will have a chance to revise at that time.  Hosts will also pick one eliminated entry to "save" that will be featured in the agent round but not move ahead to Round 2.

Winning entries must be revised and returned to QueryKombat (at) gmail (dot) com by Monday, June 6th at 8:00 am Eastern. Follow the exact same format in the original post. If you don't submit a revised entry by 8am, we'll post the original in the agent round.

Now before we begin:

Read this post again to remind yourselves of the rules and guidelines of commenting and judging. Below I've reposted the main ideas:

Reminders for the Entrants:

You may comment on your own entries after voting has ended to offer thanks or congrats. Do not otherwise respond to or explain feedback. If there is a problem with your entry, shout out to us on twitter as soon as you can. (@LH_Writes - I'm usually online in the mornings) If you don't have Twitter, you may comment on your entry telling us the mistake. Also, we tried our hardest to make the match-ups as fair as possible and against as similar stories as possible. But, obviously, this is impossible to do perfectly and some match-ups may seen very random. We apologize for this but it's an evil of the system.

Kombatants should comment on 6 other match-ups to help share the love around! But Kombatants do not cast votes. Please do not comment until after the blog host leaves a comment for the judge votes.

Reminders for the Judges:

Wait until after one of us hosts comments on each entry first and reply to that comment to cast your votes. Try making your votes objective instead of subjective (but if you really love an entry subjectively, don't even feel bad about saying it was a subjective vote - subjectivity rules!). Be sure to point out the good as well as what needs work. Post under your nicknames! If you forget, just delete and repost. And judges: seriously, thank you for doing this. It's a very tough job and isn't for the faint-hearted.

Reminders for Everyone:

Try not to comment until after one of us hosts have made the first comment, then go ahead and offer your feedback. We ask everyone who entered Query Kombat to leave at least one comment.

NOW THE FUN BEGINS!!! GO GO GO!!! We'll be Tweeting under #QueryKombat!
And may the odds be ever in your favor!

QK Round 1: Perfectly Imperfect Princess vs Monsters Are Real

Title: Penelope Charming and the Poisoned Glass Slippers
Entry Nickname: Perfectly Imperfect Princess
Word count: 53K
Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy

Query:

Twelve-year-old Princess Penelope, daughter of Cinderella, has a “charmed life.” Closets full of ruffly dresses (itchy), classes at the prestigious Charming Academy (boring), and her very own fairy godmother (annoying). Penelope would trade them all for her mother’s signature on an adventure slip to travel outside the castle walls. Too bad Cinderella refuses to sign.

Exploring secret passages and games of capture-the-frog are fun, but when a rival princess dares Penelope to steal her mother’s glass slippers, her craving for adventure results in shattered shoes days before the annual ball. Smashed slippers are small peas to Penelope, but to a villain plotting the end to her mother’s Happily Ever After, it’s a perfectly twisted opportunity. The replacement glass slippers are poisoned, casting her mother into a deathly slumber.

Feeling guilty, Penelope searches for the origin of the mysterious poison and discovers a giant’s bite shares the same symptoms. Once upon a time, an antidote to giant venom existed. Lucky for Penelope, her new friend Jack may know where to find it. With Jack’s promise to guide them, Penelope and her best friend, Red, sneak out of the castle walls to venture to the forbidden Beanstalk Forest. Penelope’s wish for adventure becomes a race to find the antidote ingredients to wake her mother before she sleeps forever after.

First 250:

Once upon a time, a princess ventured through the wilds of Fablewood…

I shoved my slingshot through my sash and dropped to the mud, peering through the rose bush. A small frog stretched out on the edge of the wishing well, belly up to the sun. His skin gleamed greener than all the plants in the garden, for this was no ordinary frog. I squeezed under the bush, but a thorn snagged the frilly hem of my dress, tearing the fabric with a loud rip. I froze.

The frog stretched his scrawny arms, wiggled a teeny bit, but his arms flopped back onto the stones. He hadn't heard me. The frog was miiine.

The brave princess had climbed tall towers, outrun villains, trudged through swamps…

Squelching stealthily through the mushy mud, I crawled to the well and paused.

One happily ever after...two happily ever after...three happily ever after.

She was Princess Penelope, daughter of Cinderella. One little frog was no match for her.

“Surrender!” I sprung to my feet. A frog-shaped puddle sparkled on the stones. The water at the bottom of the well remained calm. “Rotten peas!”

Something sharp poked my cheek.

“Gotcha, Princess Penelope!”

“Phib! When did you know I was coming?" I glared into the frog's scum-colored googley eyes.

“I saw you leave the castle doors.” Phib flourished the twig he'd poked me with like a fencing sword, bowed, and settled down, belly up to the sun once again. The dank smell of algae mixed with jasmine tickled my nose: eau de Phib.

Title: NOTHER LAND
Entry Nickname: Monsters are real.
Word count: 52K
Genre: MG Historical fantasy

Query:

Evacuated to an island off the coast of England during World War II, Alice promises to take care of her seven-year-old brother, Edwin. With their close bond, it’s an easy promise to make, but a harder one to keep, especially when she’s powerless to protect Edwin from the creepy housemaster’s attention. Coupled with severe homesickness and Mother failing to show for a visit, Alice plans an escape. But when she loses control of their getaway boat, Edwin is swept away. As she battles to reach him she sees someone carrying him from the water; someone only she saw.

Alice is convinced that Luna Mara—the so-called mythological child snatcher—has taken her brother. Wracked with guilt and determined to find Edwin, she crosses paths with Ruby, sworn enemy and class bully, who's also searching for missing family. In a moment of unintentional partnership they discover Nother Land, a place where all lost things go, and together they cross the threshold. Conflicted, the troubled pair separate and Alice is confronted with a choice: to abandon her life and stay with Edwin in a fantasy world, or risk becoming part of Nother Land’s lost to discover the truth behind her brother’s disappearance.

250 words:

The whistle screamed a warning through the station. Steam blasted from the locomotive’s engine as it hissed to life with a long sigh. My heart echoed the heavy chug-chug-chug of the train gathering pace, leaving King’s Cross behind in a blanket of fog. Away from the bombs. Away from home. Away from Mother, waving her white hanky from the platform edge.

I couldn’t see her anymore for the curtain of mist, but I kept my cheek pressed against the glass. My little brother, Edwin, couldn’t see me cry. No one could—especially not the classmates sharing my compartment. First time away from home and branded a cry baby? No, thank you. Besides, Mother said I had to be brave. I squeezed Purrl, the beanbag cat hidden under my grey school blazer, until my breath stilled.

I leant back against the rough fabric and my polished shoes shot out, my legs being too short to bend around the edge of the seat. I shuffled down an inch and my feet hung like the redhead’s in the opposite corner. Across from me, my little brother knelt facing backwards, his face still glued to the window, his breath fogging up the glass. Unruly black hair sprouted like a carrot top at his crown, despite Mother’s attempts to plaster it down with Vaseline. Next to him sat the silver-haired housemaster, Dr. Dickerson, grinding his jaw backwards and forwards. Edwin and I had known him for all of three minutes, and I already didn’t like him.

QK Round 1: Dogs and Chickens and Dragons vs Wolf in Witch Clothing

Title: Flecka Wivern and Her Two Pet Dragons
Entry Nickname: Dogs and Chickens and Dragons, Oh My!
Word count: 42K
Genre: MG Contemporary Fantasy

Query:

12-year-old Flecka Wivern is happy living a secret life as a Magical in rural Pennsylvania, even though her closest friends are her five chickens, one dog and two pet dragons. All that changes, however, when wicked little creatures from another realm called Vitterdam open a portal to Earth and kidnap her six-year-old brother Felix.

Flecka doesn’t know why anyone would want her smelly and loud little brother, but she doesn’t care--he’s her smelly and loud little brother. Now Flecka, with the help of her dragons and her non-magical (and only human) friend Darrell, must face magicked monsters and school bullies to reopen the portal. But once they open the portal, their true adventure begins--the wicked little creatures who kidnapped Felix work for Almerich, an evil sorcerer who wants to take over Vitterdam and who mysteriously believes that Felix will help him do so. Now Flecka, Darrell and her two dragons must use all the magical and non-magical tricks they have to not only save Felix, but also to save all of Vitterdam from Almerich’s clutches.

First 250:

Flecka didn't want to do her morning chores. But she had begged her mom for the chickens, and her mom had agreed provided that Flecka would be the one to take care of them.

"Your chickens, your responsibility," her mom had said, talking over the din of Felix crashing his toy trucks into the coffee table. "And if you get them to the point where their eggs hatch, then those are your responsibility too."

Flecka had agreed like any short-sighted twelve-year-old would. She loved chickens almost as much as she loved dragons.

But her love for both were flagging this muddy morning, which also happened to be the first day of fall. Which also happened to be Vitterdam Day.

Her sneakers slurped through the mucky ground as she tromped to the chicken coop to let her flock out on the wet grass. She was glad it was so damp; wet grass meant she would have to put out less fires. Wet grass meant that she would have less chores to do.

The smell of straw and droppings welcomed her as she opened the squeaky wooden door to the coop. She wrinkled her nose as she did a headcount of her flock: five purple and pink-feathered hens and two rainbow-scaled and red-horned dragons.

"Come on now," she coaxed as she held the coop door open. "I'm not going to wait forever. Now shoo!"

Her chickens clucked and trotted out, startled by Flecka's cry. Her dragons, however, did little more than give Flecka bored serpentine stares.

Title: A Tale of Witches and Wolves
Entry Nickname: Wolf in Witch Clothing
Word count: 49K
Genre: MG Fantasy

Query:

For Nata, life as a wolf in the forest is walking the line between being shot by human hunters on the one side and being cursed by witches on the other. Her only hope is to find a place for her family, especially her little brother Lev, where they can live without fear of being hunted.

But then a hunter shoots Lev. Her brother is clinging to life, and the only one who can save him is the witch Baba Yaga, who live deeps in the forest in a hut balanced on chicken legs. But going to a witch for help is one thing no wolf should ever do—a witch’s curse can make a wolf lose herself and turn against her pack.

To save her brother, Nata will have to risk a curse that will cause her to betray her family, and lose her soul.

First 250:

Nata pressed her nose to the ground and sniffed. Among the smells of moss and fallen leaves, there was the stink of rotten meat and decay that almost always marked magic. It was faint, meaning she hadn’t strayed too far into dangerous territory, but not so faint that Nata would risk going any farther.

The fur on her back stood on end. As a wolf in the forest, she couldn’t help but feel on edge. The smell of magic meant that a witch was close by, and witches were to be avoided at all costs.

She crept away from the stench, retracing her steps through a grove of spiky pine trees. Even though the smell had been faint, it still clung to her fur. Disgusting. The stink didn’t disappear fully until she reached the far side of the hill. She gulped down the clean air, breathing out her nose in sharp huffs, trying to clear out any traces of the scent. After resting a moment, she touched her nose to the ground again, and set off in a different direction, carving her way between trees and boulders.

She’d been doing this for months—weaving her way through the woods, running into the smell of a witch, retreating and starting down a new path. Deep inside her, clinging to her bones like moss on stone, was the belief that there was a place in the forest far away from danger. That if she could just find a safe passage, she and her family could go there and live without fear.

QK Round 1: Bust the Bubble Wrap vs Putt-Putt Pro

Title: Super Weenie
Entry Name: Bust the Bubble Wrap
Word count: 48,000
Genre:  MG Contemporary (#OwnVoices)

Query:

Eleven-year-old Saffron Lewis wants to be a regular kid, but her life-threatening food allergies, medical alert bracelet and ever-present EpiPen make her feel like a weirdo. Her hyper-protective mother has managed to keep her safe so far. But to Saffy, the rules, regulations and restrictions feel like bubble wrap. And she’s ready to burst free.

Saffy's starting middle school, and she's got a plan: Pretend to be Perfectly Normal.

Everything goes fine… until she eats a bite of supposedly safe cookie during a class party and goes into anaphylactic shock. She jolts awake in an ambulance. Time for a new plan: Survive Sixth Grade.

As if her own malfunctioning body isn't enough of a challenge, Saffy's got a brand new nemesis, too. Her locker mate Madison has devoted herself to making Saffy’s life totally un-fun. She calls Saffy Nut Girl, labels her defective, and tricks everyone into thinking Saffy's having another allergic reaction just to freak out Saffy's friends and entertain her own.

Making matters worse, Saffy’s mother demands the school enact a restrictive food policy to protect her daughter. The School Board gets involved. Before long there are protestors waving picket signs in front of her school.

What Saffy really wants is a superhero to swoop in and save the day. But the closest she’s got is her own despised alter ego, Super Weenie, assigned by her older brother after her first allergic reaction.

Somehow, Saffy must defeat Madison and her squadron of mean girls, defuse her mom's bubble-wrap-style restrictions, and dodge the EpiPen-wielding school nurse. With no other superheroes on the horizon, Saffy realizes there's no way to escape the cape. She'll just have to become her own superhero.

First 250:

Uh-oh. Here comes my mom. I bet she's busted out the jumbo-sized roll of bubble wrap.

The click-clack of her high-heeled shoes stops outside my bedroom door. She holds her arms wide for a hug. I squeeze her harder than normal, trying to de-activate the army of tiny robots stampeding in my belly. It doesn't work. I'm still nervous.

"Have a great first day." She tugs the tip of my braid out of my mouth.

"I will.”

"You've got your inhaler?"

"Yes, Mom. I showed you last night." Sigh.

"Okay. Dad will deliver your EpiPen to the nurse this morning." She straightens my shirt collar.

"Yep. I know. Since you're convinced I can't take care of myself." Now the robots are testing their rocket boosters.

"Please don't start, Saffron." Her hands flutter down to my wrists. "Where's your medical alert bracelet?"

"Just putting it on." I tuck it under my sleeve.

"You have to wear it every day."

"Mom! Stop worrying.”

"Fine. Say 'hi' to Britt and Jessica. I told them to watch out for you.”

"You've convinced my friends to spy on me?" I administer a megawatt glare and yank on my braid. Its tip is spit-soaked from when I was chewing on it earlier. Blech.

Dad sidles up. His daily fashion disaster is a bright pink shirt. Yeesh. Between regular first-day-of-school worries and mom's nervous breakdown over my allergies, I don't have time to help Dad with his latest clothing misfire. I can't even joke with Mom about it because I'm busy being irritated at her.

Title: Scratch
Entry Nickname: Putt-Putt Pro
Word count: 55K
Genre: MG Contemporary

Query:

Twelve-year-old Win Moore lives and breathes mini-golf, but his ultimate dream is to ditch the putter and master “real” golf at an exclusive, local country club. Short in stature and low on cash, Win scores a summer caddying job that turns from dream to nightmare when he’s fired by the country club’s snobby president.

But Win gets a second chance when the country club’s greenskeeper, Mr. Boozer, a disgraced ex-professional golfer, hires him as his summer assistant. With his sights set on the annual Junior Club Championship, Win convinces Mr. Boozer to help him go from chump to champ.

Skeptical of Mr. Boozer’s peculiar teaching strategies, Win thinks the wacky lessons are a waste of time. But if Win will give Mr. Boozer's coaching a chance, he’ll learn that being short and poor isn’t the end of the world and that every shot counts.

First 250:

Ladies and gentlemen, it all comes down to this putt.

I looked down at my golf ball, licked my lips, and squeezed the grip on my putter.

If he makes this putt, Win Moore, the pint-sized 7th grader, will become the youngest champion in golf history. The crowd hushes as Win stands over his ball.

I cleared my mind, pulled back the putter in one smooth motion, and tapped the ball. PING. It shot toward the hole 25 feet away.

And the putt is away. Moving a little left-to-right. This ball has a shot.

I loosened my grip and leaned to the right—willing the ball to move in that direction.

Win Moore likes his putt. But does it have enough speed?

“Come on. Get legs,” I mumbled.

Almost there. It’s not going to make it.

The ball slowed, froze on the edge of the hole, and debated whether to move another fraction of an inch and fall in the cup. “Drop,” I whispered. Nothing. Then the ball shifted and slid in the cup—CLINK.

It’s in the hole! He made it, ladies and gentlemen! Win Moore has won the championship!

I jabbed my putter to the sky, snatched the ball from the hole, and gave it a big, wet kiss.

“Hey, kid? Are you done yet?” a voice from behind asked. “My kids want to play mini-golf too.”

I spun around mid-celebration, mouth planted on a neon-pink golf ball, and snapped back into the real world.

QK Round 1: Book Boys Gone Wild! vs Mars Bars and Snickers

Title: Paper Seeds
Entry Nickname: Book Boys Gone Wild!
Word count: 109k
Genre: YA Magical Realism

Query:

When seventeen–year–old Harlow Jackson gets dumped at her grandma Minny's wake, she's devastated—devastated and furious. She knows Jonathan sees her as the type of girl who gets kissed in the back woods, not on a rich boy's front porch. She is sick and tired of feeling second rate in her small Southern town, and getting mean–girled by the snotty debutantes. Honestly, she’d love to burn their perfect curls off their pretty little heads, but that would just be gravy.

But then Harlow finds something Grandma Minny left her: paper seeds. Minny always told her that if you place a magical paper seed in a book, and plant it in the ground, you can grow anything you desire from its pages.

Fuming and frustrated, Harlow doesn’t grow some boring romance novel’s version of a dreamy boyfriend. No, instead she grows teenage versions of Mr. Knightley, Sherlock Holmes, Dorian Gray, and Dracula (Drake), to escort her and her friends to the debutante dance. Passing the boys off as four rather eccentric foreign exchange students fools everyone. Harlow vows that she will beat the rich town snobs—including Jonathan —at their own game, and win the debutante crown and the cash scholarship prize it includes. Because everyone knows there's only one thing better than a handsome, well-groomed, drawling Southern beau…an English gentleman.

It’s all going according to plan, until Madame LeRoux—long rumored to be the town witch—demands that Harlow give her back the paper seeds. LeRoux claims Grandma Minny stole them from her, and that there are real–life consequences for every paper seeds that’s planted. Soon, LeRoux is trying to sabotage every aspect of Harlow’s life to get them back, at the same time that Harlow’s smoking hot neighbor Rafe, and the seed boys themselves, discover where the boys are really from. To say the least, none of them take it well.

Harlow must discover answers about the paper seeds themselves if she is going to protect everyone she loves. Where did the seeds come from and how did Grandma Minny get them? Have paper seeds ever been planted in her town before? Can they be undone? As Harlow searches for answers, she finds more town secrets than she thought possible. But those secrets pale in comparison when Harlow discovers that someone she loves has been hiding the biggest, ugliest secret of them all.

First 250:

If I hadn’t been standing in the middle of my grandmother Minny's wake, I would have whacked that boy in the man parts so hard, they’d be looking at pictures of his children in years to come and say—see the funny ear that kid has? Harlow Jackson did that.

But Jonathan took my hand and squeezed it, like he was bestowing some sort of warm comfort on me. He wore the gray shirt I'd saved up a week's wages for, the one that was the exact color of his eyes.

Now, I wanted to rip it off him.

And not in a good way.

I took a deep breath and tried to be civil. “Your parents will get used to the idea of us. I have a way of winning people over, you know.” I smiled my most becoming smile and flashed my dimple. Jonathan loved my dimple. Everyone loved my dimple.

He closed his eyes. “It’s not that, Harlow.”

“Then what is it?” I said, too loud.

Madison Pace cocked her ear in our direction as she scooped bean dip onto her plate at the food table. Nosey was not an adjective in this town, it was a given.

I tugged Jonathan’s hand, and he followed me out onto the front porch. The sky was gray just waiting to burst open, the air heavy and thick. October in Georgia was not a cool, crisp autumn. It was more like standing over a pot of boiling pasta. Or maybe it was more like being the pasta.

Title: Red Letter Law
Entry Nickname: MARS BARS AND SNICKERS
Word count: 68k
Genre: YA Space Opera (#ownvoices)

Query:

In 2038, fourteen years after the start of settlements on Mars, people are selling other people. The morons who run this call it “indentured servitude”, but fifteen-year-old Lonnie Freeman doesn’t buy it. When her mom and stepdad lose a Mars-ton of money, they sign Lonnie and her sister Chelle up for servitude, saying “You’ll have enough to eat, and it’s only two Mars years.” That is, 45 months. Lonnie thinks of this as diet slavery: less calories, and less guilt, but it’s still bad for you.

While Chelle runs away to Earth, Lonnie is placed with a family of rich weirdos. The good news is, she starts to learn Arabic, she gets to care for pair of adorable three-year-old twins, and the family includes Amir, a fellow teenager who becomes Lonnie’s friend.

But everything changes when Amir’s classmate rapes Lonnie, claiming that he wants to “borrow” her from Amir. To make matters worse, Lonnie learns that the rape of servants is common. It’s a well-kept secret, as most servants are afraid do or say anything about it. Lonnie has to find a way to get her rapist put on trial, so that the servitude industry’s true colors can be seen. If she doesn’t, many more children and teens will be victimized.

First 250:

“You forgot the tampons?” I stare at my sister Rochelle in disbelief.

She stares back, confirming my fear.

“Oh, frack!” she mumbles, pulling her gaze away and starting to dig. She points down, reminding me to help.

Red dust flies up toward me as my shovel pierces the ground. We’re surrounded by a vast expanse of a desert drier than my Uncle Davis’s jokes. I look out at the cracks in the ground, which look blue through my mask, and wish I could go home to the blue planet.

“Frack nothin’,” I snap. “We have to go back to the store.”

“Lonnie, we can’t. Mom said not to use any more solar power.”

“Chelle,” I articulate carefully. “We have to go back to the store.”

She purses her full lips.

“Let’s just finish this first,” she suggests, “and then we can walk or rent a velo, okay?”

“Okay.”

We stop digging when the hole is three feet deep. From the front pocket of my jumpsuit, I take a multi-faceted silver ball a little bigger than my palm. It looks just like something they used to hang from the ceiling during parties when my grandma was my age. But this is no funky ornament; it’s a solar energy storage unit, our family’s most valuable possession. We have to bury it to keep it safe during the dust storm coming in eight hours. After the storm, dust in the air will block our solar panels. The SESU is the only way we’ll be able to power our house.

Moved by Chara’s appeal, Reed agrees to take on the quest.

Reed and Julia must track down the famous author and convince her to change Chara’s fate. But things do not go well; authors generally don’t respond favorably to other people telling them what to write. So Reed must regroup and devise a new plan. It’s a plan outside her comfort zone that will risk public humiliation on a grand scale and put all her important relationships in jeopardy. In the process Reed learns that sometimes people (fictionalized or not) need to veer from the path someone else has imagined for them.

First 250:

Reed tried to ignore the fact that she couldn’t breathe. If she just focused on the index cards and recited the words in front of her maybe her pulse would slow down and she could finish her speech. Maybe she would stop imagining her heart was going to break through its cage of bone and flesh and throw itself onto the floor, flopping around like a dying fish.

Turning to look at her best friend Julia who was sitting on the bed, Reed dropped her index cards onto the floor and put a hand to her chest, as though that might calm the monster inside. She was still for a few seconds, listening, feeling. “I think…I’m having a…heart attack,” she announced between breaths. Then she fell backward onto the bed and focused on the plastic stars glued to her ceiling. “Can seventeen-year-olds…have…heart attacks?”

Julia jumped up and put a hand over her mouth while she studied Reed. “Omigod. Your face is really red. Here.” She stuffed a pillow behind Reed’s head and slid off her pink Converse knock-offs. Then she went into the bathroom and returned with a damp washcloth. She patted Reed’s face with it, getting her sleek black bangs wet in the process. “I’m getting your mom.”

Reed grabbed her arm. “No. Give me…a minute. I think I might actually be starting to feel a little bit better.”

“Maybe you’re having a panic attack or something. I’ve read about them on Dr. Google. Do you feel panicky?”

"Now Entering Hell!”

That’s what needs to shine in brilliant reflective letters from the sign by the exit ramp. Not this, “Now Entering Douglasville” nonsense with a population estimate of thirty-two-thousand.

Thirty-two-thousand and one, now.

Then again, Douglasville, Georgia represents my own personal hell, one with a dizzying wash of green and grey, throat-coating cigarette smoke, and nauseating country music. I squint against the harsh light eeking down from the overcast clouds—I’m tired from the night spent in an airport and the early morning flight did little more than provide a power nap.

My driver’s a court official who, due to some asinine legal technicality, has to drive me to my new home. His nasal singing is enough to make me wish my forgotten parents had picked me up, or for headphones at the least. But both my sunglasses and headphones are broken. Some bloody git stepped on them during the flight from Bermuda. Given my lack of American money, replacing them will have to wait until I reach the court-determined destination—my father’s home. As far as days go, this one reeks of disaster.

Doubly so considering it’s my seventeenth birthday.

I roll down the back windows, desperate for some air not tainted by cigarette smoke. Sticky humidity assaults me. I put them up before we turn onto a street and follow the curve, before slowing to a stop in front of the two-story, red brick house where my life wait to be puzzled back together.

Not likely to happen now that Mum's dead.

Sixteen-year-old Mia’s sphere consists of two key things: her ongoing research into her French-Jewish family’s history, and her close relationship with her thirty-one-year-old brother, James. In a home where their entertainment executive parents can hardly spare a minute to say hello, James has always been Mia’s caregiver and confidant. And the feeling is mutual—Mia has supported James throughout his slow recovery from a suicide attempt that landed him back home. But when James gets engaged to an old high school ex, Claire, Mia’s life is thrown into chaos. Because along with Claire comes Claire’s teenage son, Landon—the same Landon that Mia was a few dates away from introducing to her family as new boyfriend. The Landon who is now her future step-nephew.

When financially unstable James chooses his family’s offer to pay for his wedding over his previous promise to accompany Mia on a research trip to France, Mia is crushed—and decides something must be done about Claire and James. She convinces Landon, who is equally as unhappy with the new arrangements, to help her push their respective family members to break up. As James and Claire are driven apart, Mia realizes her plan may not be flawless: James is distancing himself from her, and alarming signs of his depression are returning with a vengeance. With James unwell, Mia faces a difficult choice: if she drives Claire away for good, she’ll knock her fragile brother’s support system down by one, but if she doesn’t, she’ll lose the one member of her family she cares about most.

First 250:

Miscommunication has always been a problem in my family. Like the time my brother didn’t tell my parents he was going on a spring break trip to Copenhagen and my parents found out when he posted a photo online. Or the time my other brother didn’t tell anyone that he rescued a pregnant wiener dog and I came home to find the dog giving birth on my bed.

Or, you know, this afternoon, when I found out my parents had lent my car to my stupid holier-than-thou older brother Arthur who was home from college for the weekend. One second everything was perfectly timed for me to get to the local In-N-Out for the most important ambiguous study date/hang out with Landon Foster of my life, the next I found my side of the garage was empty.

It was futile, but I still found myself screaming, “MOM!” like I was seven years old again.

No response. I glanced over at my parents’ spots in the garage, and sure enough, they were empty too. It was 3:20, our date was for 3:30, and the restaurant was ten minutes away. There was no way I’d walk several miles to a date.

Who was still at my house? James, my oldest brother, should already be at work at this hour. Riding a bike would be an option if my mother hadn’t forbidden me from doing so ever since I ran into our neighbor’s holiday manger display. My phone dinged.

Arthur: I took your car if you’re wondering.

Rhodes Ingram never thought she'd peak at seventeen. She's dedicated six years of her life to her artistic education at Alabama Fine Arts Academy, but depression threatens to undermine all her work. With an empty portfolio and plummeting grades, Rhodes has one last shot at success: The Birmingham Arts Collective's New Horizon Scholarship.

Iliana Vrionides has spent the last two school years struggling to prove her worth as an AFAA student. What she lacks in technical ability, she makes up with a ferocious commitment to creative expression. But when her parents lose her college savings in bankruptcy court, a last-minute scholarship may be the only chance she has left.

By day, Iliana and Rhodes tear each other down to the studs as they compete for the same scholarship. By night they unknowingly piece each other together again through Slashspot, their school’s anonymous fan fiction community. Worlds collide when Iliana’s laptop is stolen and an online bully threatens to make their identities — and their steamy relationship — public knowledge. The senior show looms on the horizon, the scholarship hangs in the balance, and the girls must reconcile their love for each other online with their combative relationship in real life.

First 250:

My name is Rhodes Ingram.

I’m blowing my senior year, and I am screwed.

I wish I could say I’ve blown it fabulously, that I’ve been riotously drunk and skinny dipping in Peavine Falls. Or ignoring homework to chase after the dance track girls in their pretty buns and soft looking legwarmers. Or blowing off class to pursue my One True Craft, out tagging buildings Banksy-style and creating the kind of organic art that pays no heed to formal artistic education.

Unfortunately, none of this is the case.

Truthfully my senior year is going out with a sigh, rather than a bang: Most days bleed together, bored and flat and entirely lacking in inspiration. Nothing clicks; nothing flows. Nothing is sticking — facts, figures, formulas. I either sleep too much or not at all, stare out windows, daydream about everything and nothing.

My sketchbooks are empty. My grades have hit crisis mode. The visual arts track faculty advisor is officially Alarmed, and by the end of third period I’ll know whether my SAT scores will cover my ass where my GPA won’t give me a candle’s chance in hell.

But first, I need to survive the next twenty minutes.

Studio B’s windows are wide as they are tall, bathing the room in glorious, priceless natural light. The room is cold with air conditioning that rattles in the exposed pipes overhead, and Iliana Vrionides' breath curls hot in the shell of my ear.

First 250:

I had a date with Death once.

I took her out for pizza and a movie. Who knew Death liked comedies. I guess I should have known though. Up to that point, my life had been pretty freaking hilarious, in a Mid-Summer Night’s Dream sort of way, where the fates jerk you around just to laugh at you, which is probably what drew her to me.

My parents divorced me long before they divorced each other. Long nights at work, office parties, and too many happy hour “business meetings” let me know where I stood in their lives—in the way.

It’s no surprise Death wanted to meet me. Contrary to what most people thought, Death is female, at least mine was. Old movies, books, greeting cards at Halloween—though, some minds thought outside the box and gave Death a more feminine persona, most portrayed death as a cloaked-masculine figure with a big scythe and a quiet disposition.

When I met Death, she sat on the hood of my car outside my best friend Connor’s house, wearing jeans and a pink tank top, snapping her gum behind a Hollywood smile.

“Hey, Asher. How’s it goin’?”

Now, I never had trouble talking to girls. I wasn’t ashamed to admit I was okay looking, in a Patrick Dempsey, somewhere between Ronald Miller and Dr. McDreamy, kind of way. Most girls liked my dark hair-blue-eyed combo, six-foot frame, and broad shoulders. But, seeing her,  I admit—I felt more like dorky Ronnie than hottie Derek.

Everyone says her mother died in a car crash, but that doesn’t explain Emily’s childhood memory: watching her mother walk into the sea, never to return.

At sixteen, Emily is an extraordinarily fast varsity swimmer, until one day the chlorine burns like fire and she nearly drowns. Unable to swim again and hearing voices calling her into the ocean, Emily is reminded of her last memory of her mother. She uncovers a bundle of her mother’s old letters, from friends and family she never knew existed, all with the same return address: an island in Nova Scotia. When her father refuses to say anything about her mother, Emily resolves to go to Canada—alone.

But when Emily arrives she finds no welcome among her supposed family; they won't talk to her and want her to leave. Her only help comes from Fiona, a local whose friendship forms the intimacy Emily has always wanted. Fiona reveals the island's secret: they’re daughters of selkies, a species hiding from the human world. To protect themselves, selkies always leave their half-human children, expecting never to see them again. Emily must fight for her right to her selkie heritage, and to know the truth about whether her mother is really dead, or if she willingly abandoned her. When Emily's pursuit of the truth puts her new family in danger, she must choose between an ordinary human life cut off from Fiona, or a solution that will save the selkies and trap her as a seal forever.

If Coach Gina says one more good word about me, I may scream. But it's inevitable. Coach thinks reading our top scores every week is motivating. I just want to crawl into a hole.

Every time she says my name, I expect this to be the time the team glares at me with jealousy.

"Emily Mulligan, first place, ahead by a full second."

Instead, the girls whoop and clap for me, because my points are their points, and we are winners. Cheers bounce around the pool and I catch David grinning at me from the other side, not paying attention as the boys' coach also reads. When his name is called the guys thump him on the back and chant, "Ecklestein! Ecklestein!"

We're a pair of winners, a matched set, the perfect couple.

So why don't I enjoy any of it?

I make myself smile for the other girls.

I jump in for warm-ups, the water swallowing me. I rush downward, the bottom twelve feet below me. When I slow, I open my eyes and gaze up through the jelly-like water to the lights above.

It starts as a prickle on my arms. Then I want to rub my eyes. They're gritty, like I haven't slept. Just as I'm thinking how weird that is, the pain kicks in. I gasp water.

The prickling sensation along my skin is getting worse, it's getting spiky, it's driving needles into me, setting my nerves alight.

I don't understand. I'm the best swimmer in the state and I'm drowning.

QK Round 1: Half-Orphan's Handbook vs Quaker Rain Forest

Title: Dead Parents Camp
Entry Nickname: The Half-Orphan's Handbook
Word count: 62K
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary

Query:

After her father’s suicide, Lila Cunningham writes a two-rule handbook to protect herself from experiencing any more pain. One: Love no one. Two: Avoid liars. Easy solution: barricade herself from all relationships – romantic, friendly, or otherwise. But then Mom forgets Lila’s sixteenth birthday and compensates for it by sending her and her brother Sammy to Camp Bonaventure, a former 9/11 grief camp reimagined for today’s kids who have lost parents. In other words, a place where self-isolation equals impossible.

Despite her reluctance, Lila agrees to stay for one week to alleviate a fraction of Mom’s anguish. Right away, well-meaning bunkmates haze Lila while she’s in the shower by swapping her towel with a camp-legacy leotard. Soaking wet and fuming with embarrassment, Lila meets Noah Kitteridge, the gorgeous “other new kid” at camp who proffers an immediate appreciation for Lila’s Workout Barbie garb.  And even though Lila’s sworn off these kinds of things, at the end of the week, she kisses Noah. Angry with herself for threatening her handbook’s number-one rule, Lila stalks away – only to come upon her little brother surrounded by a throng of campers. Lila mistakenly believes Sammy is being threatened, so she punches one of them. And gets caught. The camp director’s punishment comes in the form of a choice: go home and lose cash-strapped Mom’s deposit, or stay for all eight weeks and actually try to heal.

Resigned, Lila chooses the latter, forging real friendships with her bunkmates, who understand her grief more than most others can. Someplace between swimming and s’mores, Lila ditches the handbook by falling for Noah. For the first time since her dad died, Lila’s emotional baggage feels lighter. But then the morning after the most romantic night ever, Noah vanishes. Frantic, Lila searches for him – but what she finds destroys her. Noah’s not half-orphaned. His brother was a school shooter, and Noah’s attending the trial. These facts make Noah a liar. Now, Lila must decide between the lesser of two evils: forgiving a liar, or detaching from everyone all over again.

First 250:

My mother would have spent less money on my sixteenth birthday present if she had remembered the occasion in the first place. It wasn’t her fault, though. My birthday came and went on June 1st, when the air was hot and green-smelling, the sun was strong, and my father had been dead exactly one month.

Since Dad chose to check out of Hotel Life on a permanent basis, Mom had been preoccupied with the whole widowhood thing. So she flipped over her calendar page one day late. And cried.

Because she missed my birthday, that “mom guilt” she was always writing about for online magazines compelled her to call my school counselor Dr. Barbash (whom my entire family referred to as Call-Me-Connie). That was how I came home from school on June 2nd, dumped my bag on the counter, and discovered Call-Me-Connie blabbed to my mother about Camp Bonaventure.

And — with a pause for emphasis — my mother was going to spring for it for my belated birthday present.

“I’m not going,” I said, opening the kitchen cabinet.

The hope on her face fizzled. “Call-Me-Connie says it’s amazing, Lila.”

My familiar friend, Panic, stomped into my chest, settling her curvaceous hips into my sternum. “She also says Madonna is talentless. Plus, Call-Me-Connie has sweaty palms.” My mother would consider the Madonna statement blasphemy, and sweaty palms skeeve her out.

“Call-Me-Connie’s lack of musical taste — and unfortunate sweating malady — hardly affect her ability to judge what might help you.”

“This won’t.”

Seventeen-year-old Samantha Waterman has just lost her father, the person in life she adored more than any other. Now her therapist Mom is dragging her and her brother across the continent to spend the summer in Costa Rica, where her father grew up, to help her “move on.”  Even worse, they’re living in a Quaker community in the rainforest with no telephones, no hot water, and no Internet. Sammy’s not sure about electricity but it’s not looking good.

At first Sammy doesn’t like Costa Rica. The ice-cold showers are way too refreshing and the nightly ritual of turning shoes upside-down to avoid scorpion infestation is downright alarming. But as she makes friends with a quirky pregnant twenty-something who wants to teach Samantha perfect Spanish, falls in love with a guy who lights up even the darkest corners of the rainforest, and discovers a secret library where she unearths her father’s old journals, she begins to feel like life might be worth living.

Despite her father’s death, maybe Sammy can find her own inner light in Costa Rica’s tangled rainforest.

First 250:

June 23

Hi Dad,

Bad news -- I’m sure you already know. (Since you’re dead, I assume you got the
memo.) Our flight was delayed. Mechanical reasons, which isn’t as reassuring as the airline thinks it is. Mom, Nathan, and I are stuck at the Farrier Hotel in Boston. It had the only room we could find on short notice but it does come with a Free Continental Breakfast. Hello, Corn Flakes and miniature glasses of orange juice.

The rooms are decorated with maroon Oriental style rugs and dark furniture. The mattresses are lumpy (just like Grandma’s sofa bed – remember that?) with quilted brown bedspreads. Not pretty brown. The kind of brown you’d find at the bottom of a dirty puddle.

But at least we have electricity.

I’ll be honest. I’m sure Costa Rica is a very cool place but I’m dreading this summer. It’s supposed to be a nature lover’s paradise (ziplines, toucans, rainbows!). Nathan will love it. I just wish I could have chosen whether or not I actually had to go. Although, I know you loved it there, which makes it a little more bearable...

Unfortunately, tomorrow’s regularly scheduled tour of the mountain village we’re moving to will clearly not take place, given our unfortunate delay. We’re jumping in all or nothing, right?

So, you want the truth?

Here it is in its raw glory: I don’t know what I’m doing with this journaling thing. I haven’t written in one since I was in sixth grade. Remember that diary Mom bought me?

QK Round 1: The Barringer Museum vs TB Ruined My Day

Title: We, Freaks
Entry Nickname: The Barringer Museum
Word count: 78K
Genre: Adult Speculative Fiction

Query:

Sideshow talkers claim the true freak is born, not made. That a pregnant mother’s obsession with an eerie run-in with a dog led to a fur-faced baby boy, or that a woman’s all-consuming fear of sea serpents etched scales on the fetus growing inside of her. To most audience members, these tales are purely advertising, an expected part of a tradition built on deceit and distortion.

But to two men, a museum owner in 19th century New York City and a PhD candidate in present-day Ann Arbor, MI, these boasts and backstories are improbably beginning to resemble truth.

As the museum owner risks his reputation on a folktale to fill his establishment with never-before-seen freaks, the student grows traumatized by a scientific study of the phenomenon and sets out to disprove it. At the center of both stories lie the individuals who never wanted their bodies to define them, those with tails or fur or gills whose lives are falling victim to men who can never understand their existence.

First 250:

Theodore Barringer had planned to spend his morning crafting an exhibit about a romance between Thomas Jefferson and America’s first swivel chair, but instead, he faced a conundrum: two women—or possibly one woman if he squinted at his present guests and let his vision overwhelm any mental analysis. They said she wanted to work at the museum. She said they were in search of a new job. The right one—she called herself Patrice—and the left one—she referred to herself as Alice—said they had heard he was hiring performers and they wanted to be two of them, and, of course, they were happy to call themselves as many as five, but would require costuming assistance for that many bodies.

“Well…” Theodore paused, uncommonly without words to finish his beginning. Because she—no, they (he must retain his focus on the outlines of the two so very separate bodies) sitting uncomfortably tall before him were beings he’d never once heard rumors of in New York City. There were giants, Circassian beauties, and wild men, but no humans quite like these—none so… authentic. At Spooner’s and the Eastern Dime Museum, Theodore could always discern the hoax: the 90 year-old woman boasting 160 years of age, the siblings from Virginia advertising Mayan heritage, the thin men who never weighed as little as they claimed they did… The frauds of humanity were growing commonplace in the city, but these women before him… he could not discern the craft of their deception.

It’s 1913 when Anna McIntosh, a young woman from the suburbs of Boston, secretly marries Charles Patrinos, a Greek immigrant. The sacrifices and hardships were to be expected, but when Charles surreptitiously leaves Anna alone and pregnant upon discovering he has TB, her struggles truly begin.

Meanwhile, Charles Patrinos is an honest man in love with his wife and excited about the new family they are becoming, so when he has to endure the journey to death alone in order to protect them, he does what he must do. Yet, when after months in the sanatorium, the doctor announces he may survive, the guilt, loss and consequences of his actions may prove too much to overcome.

First 250:

Anna McIntosh peered anxiously through the lace curtains scanning for Charles’ approach, but when the brass knocker finally banged against the front door of 10 Levant Street, her heart dropped. In moments, her parents would discover what she hadn’t told them about the young man she fancied. Perhaps she’d erred by omitting the obvious, but she’d wanted them to learn favorable things first. She had accurately described him as handsome and chivalrous, qualities her mother would desire, as well as intelligent and hardworking, traits her father considered essential. She’d hoped highlighting his positive attributes would garner her parents’ favor, yet now that he waited outside, Anna wanted to catapult from her seat in the parlor and send him away. But it was too late. Her mother had already answered the door.

“The ink hasn’t dried on the treaty and already the Balkans are fighting again,” Mr. McIntosh remarked setting down his newspaper and looking expectantly toward the foyer.

In the entryway, Charles stood as tall as a man five-foot six-inches could stand. When he removed his hat in greeting, droplets of water dripped from its brim. He held in his hand a modest bouquet of rain-whipped flowers, which Anna’s mother graciously accepted while inviting him in. They exchanged polite smiles. Charles stepped over the threshold while Anna’s father strode toward the door. Anna remained on the settee as was proper, her younger sister Jessie propped beside her appearing as if she were watching a play.

QK Round 1: Beards vs She's Fast, He's Furious

Title: Chai, Beards, and Harmony
Entry Nickname: Beards
Word count: 71K
Genre: Contemporary Adult Rom-Com (Own Voices)

Query:

Amira Khan is too old for her noisy dorm, and exhausted from reporters’ constant calls for her personal 'hot take' on Islamophobia. She needs peace and quiet, and intends to get it by leaving grad school early to finish her thesis at her Grandmother's house. But it turns out, her grandmother rented the basement to a Barbershop Quartet. What? Amira needs silence; they need to rehearse for an upcoming competition, and the overgrown garden-gnome of a baritone is making her absolutely crazy.

For the sake of his family, Duncan Galahad has to stay in the tiny town he calls home. But he needs big-city cred even for small town gigs these days, and winning this competition might give him top billing, so he can't let an outspoken, overbearing engineer like Amira get in his way. Even if outspoken, overbearing women are his exact catnip, Duncan knows women like that have no time for small-town singers with no steady pay-check. And Amira might be way too much... even for his tastes.

Inexplicably, Amira finds a harmonious friendship with the misfit singers. And soon enough, she finds that clashes with Duncan outside bedroom only means hitting all the right notes between the sheets, as they both find exactly what they crave.

Their differences are only skin deep, literally, but Duncan comes from a world that sees Amira as nothing more than a cautionary tale against multiculturalism. And Amira long ago decided that only someone like her, could understand her. To make it work, they both have to not only accept their differences, but fight for them.

First 250:

If there was a Sufi Saint protecting single women travelers, Amira Khan was sure she’d royally pissed her off at some point in a previous life. The last time she tried to travel, she’d been ceremoniously escorted out of the security clearance area of Toronto airport, having been denied boarding her flight to Philadelphia. Nothing like that could happen now— this was a train, and there was no border crossing between her University in Kingston, and her house in Toronto. No border meant no overzealous border guards accusing her of terrorism because of her last name and fondness for Arabic calligraphy. But seeing as her train stood stuck in some place called Port Hope, and a creepy man wearing silver pants was leering at her, Amira clearly couldn't trust any deity to help her reach her destination unscathed.

She discreetly peeked at the creep. Shiny grey pants, black shirt open to reveal a silvery-grey undershirt, plus gold chains and a vile facial expression. Fuck… Amira hated traveling alone. She’d left grad school early because of overly creepy guys… only to get stuck on an almost empty train car with a gruesome member of the male species.

Finally, the doors slid open for new passengers. Good. More people meant more protection should things get hairy with the slick sleaze. Only one boarded— a large man with a lurid, orangey-red beard. Holy hell, that was bright. He accessorized his facial hair with a red-plaid flannel and black suspenders, resulting in a look that could only be described as Garden-Gnome chic.

The cool March air screams past me as I downshift in my approach to turn fourteen, a damn near 90-degree right corner on the Losail International track.

My body leans right, commanding my 300lb motorcycle around the tighter-than-tight turn. As I creep closer to horizontal than vertical, my knee scrapes the track while my braid hangs over my shoulder, flirting with the pavement rippling inches away from my helmet—my trademark American flag painted across my crown.

I tuck in my elbow and control my breathing. Twenty-one laps down, two turns to go, and then I will fly over the finish line: the first woman in history to win a race in MotoGP. The first woman ever to race in MotoGP. And all I have to do is what I’ve managed for ten years: ignore the part of me that wants to rope Massimo into a bedroom, and instead, beat him to the finish line one last time.

Fourth gear. I tilt her vertical and charge toward the sharp left of fifteen. Fifth gear. Sixth. Golden dust flashes on my right, black pavement and gray bailout gravel rushing by my left. The stadium lights of Qatar lead the way, and I fade left, forcing Massimo’s royal blue fairing further inside than he wants it to be. I never set out for us to be enemies, but if the Italian know-it-all jerk would’ve kept his distance, it would’ve made the fact that I can’t stop dreaming about his body against mine so much easier to ignore.
